Ollie's Broody

Ollie finally decided to get seriously broody yesterday. So she sat all day in the nest box on...nothing. I felt sorry for her today and put two golf balls under her. She seems happy to have something to fidget and fuss with. I gave them to her at the edge of the nest box and she clucked happily as she tucked them underneath her warm bottom.

So in about 21 days I should have a lovely pair of Titleists running around the coop. Unless one of you folks out there would like to send me a couple of fertile eggs to put under this determined gal!

These peeps better watch out or Ollie will teach them a hard lesson. Maude seems intent on staring at her.

The peeps are 7 weeks old on Friday and they are learning to be big girls. They've begun roosting on this pine branch a few days ago. Aren't they cute up there? Don't they look smug and smart?

  1. Ollie is soooo cute! You can see the personality spilling out of those girls. Just look at those beautiful green eyes on the last girl! Just love em!

  3. Actually I'd kind of like to see the little Titleists grow legs and start running around. That's be kind of cool. Maybe they'll even sprout feathers. Well,if you weren't so far away, I'd be happy to share some fertile eggs with your chickens!!

  4. I'd give you a dozen (or two) fertile eggs too. :)

It's funny how much fuss they make over the eggs/golf balls/plastic easter eggs.

  6. If you really want some fertile eggs to put under her send me an e-mail :)

Little Titleists would be fun! She is very cute tucking them under her. I have a bunch of broody girls here, but I haven't had any sit on nothing.

  7. Thanks for the offers of eggs. I found a nice gal not far from here who's got some Buff Orp eggs she's going to mail to me on Monday, 6 of 'em.

While I know you're all on tenderhooks waiting for those Titleists to hatch, I feel it's better for Ollie's sanity if we give her some real eggs.

    Stay tuned...

And I'm glad none of you were drinking a glass of milk while you read this post.

  9. How exciting for you AND for Ollie that there may be some baby peeps for her to care for! What kind of Hen is Ollie? Again, new to the chicken thing, I have no experience but hoping that one of my babies will go broody NEXT spring. It would be much easier if she would do the hard work. Raising baby chicks was HARD!

  10. Your chicks are turning out to be pretty little ladies! Glad you found some eggs... Orpingtons will be nice. They are a gentle bird

  11. Lisa, Ollie is a one year old Buff Orpington. I think everyone I know who has chickens has started out with BO's. They are excellent layers with good winter hardiness and they are friendly. Raising baby chicks is a little but of fun and a lot of work! I agree, let mama do it.

Sunny, we are looking forward to the prospect of having a brood of chicks with Ollie as their mom. She's going to be a good one for sure.
