Lily (black) and Sweetheart (buff) came up on the back deck today. Lily comes up to the door regularly to beg for treats. Sweetheart just happened to join her. Then they noticed movement on the other side of the glass. What were those? They froze and just watched the peeps. The peeps saw the big girls and they froze too, just staring.
Watching this interaction filled my mind with questions that can't be answered because neither party can speak. I wonder what was going through their minds. Sweetheart has seen the peeps before through the front window. I wonder if she wants to take care of them or if she's just curious about what they are. I wonder if the peeps know that they're looking at a potential mama. But who knows what goes through the mind of a chicken?
So cute! I had a big goose one time, and she desperately wanted to hatch eggs, but, no husband. When we got baby chicks and ducks, she took them under her wing and raised them - they followed her everywhere, and she guarded them as if her life depended on it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great photo. I would not have thought that chickens would be nosey like cats and want to know what's going on :)
ReplyDeleteI wonder the same thing when the neighbor's cows come over to see the goats. All the animals will stand nose to nose through the fence talking to each other. You wonder what is going on.
ReplyDeletelove it when the chickens visit on the deck, but I hate all the chicken poop they leave!
ReplyDeleteThey may want to be their Mama's. Our chickens are nosy too. Franklin, out male turkey, is a downright peeping tom.
ReplyDeleteLOL knowing chickens like I do....the big girls were wondering how they could get in that cage and eat the little chickens, and the little chickens knew they were being sized up for dipping sauce. Most big chickens eat little chickens. That is why momma has to look so mean and puffy while she is broody.
ReplyDeleteIt would be neat to know what they're thinking... chickens are so curious about EVERYTHING, you just wonder whats going on in those little heads!
ReplyDeleteI always wonder what is on each animals mind. I wonder if the hens and chicks are suffering from the grass is greener? :) It definitely looks like Lily and Sweetheart would like to step in for a visit.
ReplyDeleteHow cute. I had two hens who hatched chicks at the same time. One hen did not care for motherhood, which was strange, and she pecked her babies something terrible. I removed her chicks from her and gave them to the other hen who took them in as her own. The mean hen was glad to join the other chickens. When the time came for the other hen to leave her babies, she would hang around the holding cage and never leave their side. It is interesting to know how they think. blessings,Kathleen
