Snowbound

We got a heapin' helpin' of snow last night and the guys spent the day digging us out. I estimate that we got about 6" of snow. School was cancelled and I called in to work last night and said I wasn't coming in. So what to do? Well, you know me! I got busy in the kitchen.

I made two more loaves of delicious oatmeal honey bread and a dozen blueberry-oatmeal muffins. I love it when I can bake two different things side by side in the oven. I found some nice blueberries on sale earlier this week and wanted to use them in a way that would highlight their wonderful flavor, so muffins it is.

When the muffins were ready I took some out to the guys who were busily shoveling snow. The chickens and ducks are once again refusing to leave the coop. It's going to be a big mess in that chicken coop and I'm itching to clean it out. But I have to wait till it warms up a bit first. At least the girls are laying good now. They've laid a dozen eggs so far today!

  1. These look really great. I wonder why my photography sucks so bad? Any tips? And a blueberry recipe... although I've seen it before here, haven't I? Or is that just wishful thinking.

  2. I thought you were a stay-at-home Mom.

The baking looks good. We're still eating on the sourdough, it makes great toast.

    Stay warm

  3. Meadowlark, I invested in a good quality digital camera a few years ago and it has served me well. I sat down with the manual and learned about its capabilities and I think that's the best way to improve photo quality. Cameras these days are really packed with features, so learning to use them can be daunting! The blueberry muffin recipe is just a basic muffin recipe using blueberries. I also added in 3/4 cup of rolled oats.

Joanna, nope. I am not a stay at home mom. I should be though. But of course we wouldn't make enough to maintain our lifestyle, so I must work. I work for a company that makes giant conveyor belts for mines and quarries called Fenner-Dunlop. The economy has struck our company too and there was a recent layoff, but I made the cut.

  4. Those muffins sure look a lot better than my lard cookie dough!

I would have had 11 eggs today, but I squished 3 of them in my coat pocket while I was shoveling the path to the barn. I kept wondering why my right leg felt so much colder than the left one. Needless to say, I had to wash the coat. Ugh!

  5. Susan, I dunno, those lard cookies looked really tempting! Last winter I made suet for the birds and it went like hot cakes! Too pricey to do it this year though. One of these days, I'm gonna squish some eggs in my pocket too. It's just a matter of time. I'm surprised it didn't happen today because I was crouched down catching ducks and tossing them out of the coop! LOL

  10. The muffins look delicious! I'm thinking that I am going to bake something like that too, it sure is cold enough, hmmm. I need to get in there and clean out our chicken coop too, it is getting stinky. My banty hens quit laying but my big chicken is still laying faithrully, one a day!
